The Bono IA: what we know

On 21 September 2026 the Government presented the Plan IA360, which includes an Artificial Intelligence grant to help SMEs build AI into their day-to-day work. This is what has been published about the plan:

Who it’s for

SMEs

The plan talks about companies and SMEs. It doesn’t yet say whether the self-employed will be included.

Planned budget

600 million euros

For the general call. The amount per company hasn’t been set yet.

What it will fund

Services, not licences

Building AI into your business. A tool subscription on its own doesn’t qualify.

Providers

European technology

Solutions from European tech companies that add their own value.

Planned timeline

  • Before the end of 2026Pilot of the Red NEURONA network with 100 SMEs in two autonomous regions.
  • First half of 2027Design of the grant and preparation of its rules.
  • Before the end of 2027General call, with 600 million euros.

These are Government forecasts and may change. What counts is what is published in the BOE (Spain’s Official State Gazette): until then, nobody can process this grant for you.

If someone offers today to “get you the Bono IA” or “the Kit Digital”, ask them which call is open and for the official link. As of today there are none.

What you could fund with these grants

The rules don’t exist yet, but previous grants and what has been announced for the Bono IA give a good idea of what may qualify:

Brand and website

Online presence

Website, online shop and social media management.

Automation

Processes

Process management and e-invoicing.

Operations

Data and customers

Business intelligence, analytics and customer management.

Five steps before the call opens

Imagine a shoe shop with two branches and seven people. Every Monday someone prepares the sales report and the supplier orders by hand. This is how it would get ready to apply for the Bono IA as soon as it opens:

  1. It reviews its tasks. It takes the self-assessment and notes how much time those tasks take each week: about 6 hours across the two shops.
  2. It prioritises one. It picks the supplier orders, because as well as taking hours they cause stock-outs.
  3. It writes the scope on one page. What gets automated, with which tools, what data is needed and who checks each order before it’s sent.
  4. It measures the starting point. Hours, orders with errors and stock-outs in the last quarter. These will help justify the project.
  5. It asks for two quotes with the scope fixed, so they’re ready when the rules come out.

~6 ha week on manual tasks (estimate)

The idea: when the call opens, whoever already has their project defined and measured will get there first.

What happened to the Kit Digital

It was the best-known digitalisation grant programme, funded by the European Next Generation EU funds and managed by Red.es. It gave grants of €3,000 to €29,000 depending on company size to pay for a website, online shop, customer management and other solutions. The deadlines closed in stages and the last one ended on 31 October 2025.

In January 2026 Order TDF/39/2026 extended the programme until the funds run out: if there is money left over, Red.es can revive applications turned down for lack of funds or open new calls. As of today there are none open.

Frequently asked questions

When will the Bono IA open?

The Government expects the general call for applications before the end of 2027, after a pilot. There is no official date and no published rules yet.

Will I be able to apply for the Bono IA if I’m self-employed?

It isn’t clear yet. The Plan IA360 talks about SMEs and companies, but doesn’t mention the self-employed. We’ll have to wait for the rules.

Can I apply for the Kit Digital today?

No. There is no call open for new applications. The last deadline closed on 31 October 2025.

Is there other funding?

Yes. Regional governments, town councils and chambers of commerce run their own schemes. They vary by area, so you need to check them case by case.

Is it worth waiting for the grant?

It depends on what waiting costs you. If a task takes hours out of every week, work out how much you lose while the call arrives and decide with that number.
